Making the New HoopGirl Allstars Demo Video!

2008_04_Bentley.jpgLast night we did the recording for the new HoopGirl Allstars demo! This has been a project in the making for two years. For whatever reason, it seemed like all our last attempts were interrupted by life ... but finally, last night came off like a charm! One of our wonderful students who owns a massive bank reserve in downtown San Francisco kindly let us use the space. It is gorgeous! And very San Francisco.

The girls created all the choreography and costumes themselves. They have been self-directing for some time now, and it was sweet to just provide last minute support and coaching for them and see that they have really come into their own! They even made all the arrangements for the camerawork and space. They really do have their own unique giggly, joyous vibration and I am so proud of them. Their medicine is so clear... they deliver joy through hooping! As emissaries of a high love vibration, they dance very differently than if they were delivering a circus vibe or a bad-ass vibe... I adore them so being so focused on the good feelings they are sharing.

We arrived at 6 and it took until 9pm for us to start shooting because the lights kept shorting... luckily this was a blessing in disguise because the camera man, Carson, called his friend Andre who showed up with even better lights and a second camera! So suddenly the shoot was way more professional, as a result of what seemed a "problem". I love it when things like that happen!

Meanwhile, the girls used the time to get dolled up. The "dolling up" process is actually half the fun when it comes to these things! Satise, Natasha, Annie and Shawna were giggling and playing while they applied fake eyelashes, makeup, hair falls, jewels, bangles, fishnets, bronzing, and glitter... We had some music playing already to get in the mood and snacked on chocolate covered pretzels. After this, the rest of the time was spent rehearsing choreography until the lights arrived.

We were there till midnight! By the time we approached the end, I was hurrying them through shots and looks so they could get all the essentials done in time. I was constantly calling out counts again and again for them , "1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8", watching for costume failure or anything else that would require a re-take. They cruised through it all like pros! Layer upon layer of makeup was being applied to fit each look and they only had 20 minutes to change between each one since we started shooting so late. In between looks, stockings were flying into the air, flowers ripped off, bangles and earring clattered to the floor and they slithered into new outfits What a hectic, but fun adventure! I looked over the shoulders of the cameramen while they shot and they had some sweet images... lots to choose from for a demo that will only be 2 minutes and 30 seconds!!!

While I was driving home, I reflected on what a blessing these women are in my life. Years ago when I moved to San Francisco I had I dream of creating a troupe of powerful, inspiring women. I remember recruiting Annie and Satise from the first intermediate class and their timid beginnings performing in front of groups. Now, many generations of HoopGirl Allstars later, look at these goddesses! They each shine with confidence, positivity, and sheer talent. I love that they are so committed to their own success and growth. I love that they take the initiative to make things happen. I love that they encourage eachother to step into their highest potential. I love that they are such shiney, happy, friendly, loving women. I love that they are so committed to taking the art of hoopdance to the next level. I am so grateful!
